Thamesport lengthens container cranes to cope with big ships British container terminal Thamesport will modernize five 15-year-old quay container cranes to enable them to handle larger containerships calling at its deepwater facility.
   The maximum hoist height of the cranes will be increased by three meters (10 feet) and the outreach of the cranes extended by 2.5 meters (8 feet) to make it possible to handle ships that have containers stacked seven high on deck, and 17 rows across.
   The modifications will commence in mid-January, and will take six months to complete, at a cost of '2.4 million ($4.6 million).
   Thamesport said it is attracting some of the largest vessels in operation today, such as the 6,332-TEU “Hatsu Envoy,” employed on Evergreen’s Far East-Europe “CEM” service.
   Thamesport is owned by the Hutchison Port Holdings group.
