Kerry takes on auto logistics in Thailand

   Hong Kong-based Kerry Logistics said Monday it has acquired land near Thailand’s Laem Chabang seaport for the construction of a 35,000-square-meter logistics center aimed at the automotive sector.
   The location of the center in Rayong Province, Thailand, is a cluster for car manufacturing, with more than 500 automotive factores. Kerry said brands such as General Motors, Ford, Mazda and Suzuki have already established assembly operations in the area.
   The value of logistics services in the automotive zone in 2011 totaled $66 million and is forecast to increase by more than 25 percent by 2015, Kerry said. Laem Chabang is Thailand’s biggest port.
   The center is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2013 and include plans for a covered storage area, with services such as inventory control, processing and packaging, automotive pre-assembly, sub-assembly, sequencing, and just-in-time delivery to be offered.
   Kerry said it will provide quality control and inspection for vehicles on arrival, batch and sequence parts for delivery to customers’ own facilities or send directly to end-users.
