Polar’s crewmembers end strike, reach tentative deal    A two-week strike by Polar Air Cargo crewmembers has ended after the airline’s parent company Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (AAWW), and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.
   AAWW plans to merge its two subsidiaries Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo. AWW and the ALPA had been in negotiations for an amended agreement since 2003. The two parties were released from negotiations last month by the National Mediation Board into a mandated 30-day cooling off period, which ended Sept. 16, after which the decision to strike was made.
   “I am very pleased that we have reached a settlement in this matter,” said Jeffrey H. Erickson, president and chief executive officer of AAWW. “We can now focus our energies on the upcoming peak shipping season and continued extensive work for the military.”
   The tentative agreement is now subject to ratification by Polar’s crewmembers, which AAWW expects to be completed Oct. 5.
