Va. delays Heartland intermodal site selection The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation said earlier this month that it has postponed a decision on where to locate a rail-truck transfer yard on the proposed Heartland Corridor project until April.
   'We are sensitive to the needs of the community involved in this intermodal facility site search, and we don't want to rush into a decision,' said DRPT Director Matthew Tucker. 'The public comments have been very helpful, and we look forward to working with localities as we continue through the site review process.'
   Opposition to a proposed intermodal yard near Roanoke, Va., is being mounted by a group of local residents. The Heartland Corridor is a multistate project to create a more efficient route for moving ocean freight from the Port of Norfolk to the Midwest on the Norfolk Southern line. The more direct route requires the tunnels to be expanded to accommodate double-stack container cars.
