The new marine terminal allows the port to handle double the amount of ships simultaneously and gives Johnstown 10 additional acres of lay down space to accommodate more cargo. The new, 18-acre wharf also ensures that more than 500,000 metric tons of salt a year can continue to be transported from Ontario’s salt mines.
The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the Township of Edwardsburg Cardinal each made investments of up to $11,575,412 for the project.
The Port of Johnstown is located at the junction of two major highways, 401 and 416, on the Toronto-Montreal railway corridor. The port handles over 1.2 million metric tons of bulk and liquid cargoes annually and over 700,000 metric tons of wheat, soybeans and corn each year.
