USDA approves trade help for Idaho potato producers    The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service approved a petition for trade adjustment assistance that was filed by the Potato Growers of Idaho in Blackfoot, Idaho.
   Idaho potato producers who produce fresh market potatoes are now eligible to apply for fiscal 2005 benefits during an application period ending on June 27.
   Upon investigation, the USDA determined that increased imports of french fries contributed significantly to a decline in producer prices of fresh potatoes in Idaho by 21 percent during January-December 2003, when compared with the previous five-year average.
   Eligible producers must apply to the Farm Service Agency for benefits. The Extension Service will provide free technical assistance and eligible producers may receive an adjustment assistance payment if certain criteria are met.
