JAL adjusts up fuel surcharge

JAL adjusts up fuel surcharge Japan Airlines said Friday it is seeking permission from Japanese authorities to raise its fuel surcharge for cargo customers on flights departing Japan, effective Oct. 1.
   Fees would increase to:
   ' 157 yen ($1.44) from 136 yen ($1.24) per kilogram on long-haul flights.
   ' 135 yen from 117 yen for medium-haul flights.
   ' 113 yen from 98 yen for short-distance flights.
      The move is necessary because jet fuel on the Singapore market averaged more than $163 per barrel in the three-month period ended in July, the airline said. It comes as other airlines, such as British Airways, are lowering their cargo fuel surcharges as world oil prices recede from recent highs.
   JAL said it took the oil situation into account by not pegging the surcharge to its highest possible benchmark level.
