MED SHIPPING TO ADD SECOND PACIFIC SERVICE NEXT YEAR
Mediterranean Shipping Co. said that it plans to add a second transpacific service next year, once new vessels have been delivered to the company."We are looking at a second transpacific service," said Capt. Nicola Arena, president of Mediterranean Shipping Co. (USA) Inc.
Arena said that the carrier is not likely to launch the second service until new 6,000-TEU have been delivered and introduced in its Asia/Europe service, allowing existing ships of 4,000-TEU ships to move to the Pacific trade.
The first 6,000-TEU ship is expected to be delivered in June 2001.
Arena said that new ports of call at Taiwanese and Southeast Asian ports may be added next year when the Mediterranean Shipping’s transpacific services are expanded.
In a separate development, Mediterranean Shipping has added weekly calls at the Chinese port Qingdao, replacing calls at Xingang, also in China.
Mediterranean Shipping’s current weekly transpacific service calls at Los Angeles, Qingdao, Shanghai, Chiwan, Hong Kong, Busan, Kobe, Yokohama and Los Angeles.
