Sadik-Khan named NYC Transport Commissioner

Sadik-Khan named NYC Transport Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan has been named commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
She is a former deputy administrator in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, where she was involved in providing federal assistance to mass transit agencies and supervising construction of federally funded transit capital projects.
Most recently, Sadik-Khan served as senior vice president at Parsons Brinckerhoff, as their transit industry director. She has worked in city government before, as senior advisor to Mayor David Dinkins on mass transit issues, and as special counsel to the commissioner of New York City DOT.
“Janette will be an integral part of that as we work to meet the challenges that the Mayor has laid out as part of PlaNYC,” said Daniel Doctoroff, deputy mayor for economic development and rebuilding, referring to a major initiative unveiled by the mayor last week. PlaNYC includes many transportation initiatives such as “congestion pricing” — special fees on trucks and automobiles that enter much of Manhattan during the day — and improvements to the city’s mass transit systems.
Sadik-Khan will oversee an agency with more than 4,400 employees and a budget of more than $600 million per year, and will be responsible for managing much of the city’s transportation infrastructure, including 5,800 miles of city streets and highways, 790 bridges and six tunnels.
