NEW CARGO SECURITY GROUP TO RELEASE STUDIES IN JUNE

NEW CARGO SECURITY GROUP TO RELEASE STUDIES IN JUNE    A new group comprised of supply chain and logistics professionals from the public and private sectors, will release two reports this summer assessing cargo security procedures. The reports, to be issued to government and industry leaders June 30, will comment on supply chain security measures of multinational shippers, and comment on U.S. Government agencies’ practices pertinent to supply chain security.
The Strategic Council on Security Technology, which was launched Monday, will meet twice a year to review evolving technologies, and will commission reports to foster a better understanding of supply chain security solutions, while encouraging government-industry initiatives to tighten supply chain security.
The council’s founding members include experienced professionals in cargo transport, including Gen. John Coburn, a retired four-star general from the U.S. Army Materiel Command; Sam Banks, former Deputy and Acting Commissioner of the U.S. Customs Commission; and Gen. Walter Kross, a retired Air Force four-star general and former commander-in-chief of the U.S. Transportation Command.
Kross is currently the president and chief executive officer of Flight Explorer, a company that provides real-time flight tracking systems. Kross stressed that supply chain security is a preventive measure, adding that if a terrorist event occurred at any place in the supply chain, it would halt cargo traffic in several modes – perhaps globally – for an indefinite time. “We’re only one event away from that kind of gridlock,” he said.
