Samskip pulls ship from Iceland service

Samskip pulls ship from Iceland service Icelandic carrier Samskip said it is restructuring service between the island nation and the rest of Europe.
   “In light of the economic crisis that is engulfing the Icelandic nation, in addition to declining imports, Samskip’s sailing schedule to and from Iceland has been reviewed and restructured: three container vessels will now handle the company’s transport on this route instead of the previous four,” the company said. The ship Akrafell will no longer sail between Iceland and mainland Europe, but will take on other tasks unrelated to Iceland.
   With these changes, which have already been implemented, Samskip said it has been able to adjust its transport capacity to meet Iceland’s changed economic environment and trim costs.
   The ship Hvassafell will continue its scheduled route between Rey'arfj'r'ur in East Iceland, Kollafj'r'ur in the Faroe Islands, Rotterdam, and Immingham in Britain, but now without calling Reykjav'k. It will service the ports at eight to nine-day intervals.
   The Arnarfell and Helgafell will continue to service their weekly route between Reykjav'k, Grundartangi, the Westman Islands, Immingham, Rotterdam, Cuxhaven in Germany, Varberg in Sweden, Aarhus in Denmark and Kollafj'r'ur.
