Trade with Asia for the quarter, the region the airport does the most business with, fell 5 percent from the same period in 2014. In addition, trade with Europe fell 10 percent year-over-year in the third quarter.
On a bright note, trade with North America for the third quarter was up 2.3 percent, while trade with the Middle East was up 8 percent; Africa, up 4 percent; and Latin America, up 12 percent, compared to the third quarter of 2014.
Overall, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has handled 1.19 million tons of cargo since the start of 2015. On a year-to-date basis, Asia has made up 37.8 percent of the share, followed by North America (19.2 percent), the Middle East (13 percent), Africa (10.9 percent), Latin America (10.8 percent) and Europe (8.3 percent).
“The tonnages to date are still down slightly on 2014, which was a record year; but, when compared to 2013, they are actually up 6.5 percent. The underlying trend is generally positive, therefore,” Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Director of Cargo Jonas van Stekelenburg said in a statement.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol features 28 scheduled freighter operators and seven cargo handling agents. The airport is equipped with 400,000 square meters of cargo warehouses, in which 60 percent have direct air-side access.
