New WCO Data Model released    The World Customs Organization announced this week the launch of the latest version of its Data Model, a global customs systems blueprint for optimizing electronic data exchange.
   'Launching this latest version of the Data Model is a great step forward in terms of trade facilitation, the use of modern communication and information technologies, and the implementation of a Single Window environment,' said WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya, in a statement.
   Version 3 of the Data Model enhances the electronic treatment of data by providing 'whole-of-government' data sets including requirements for cross-border regulatory agencies, such as customs, agriculture and environmental protection, which control export, import and transit, the Brussels-based organization noted.
   'Taking on board current Single Window developments and innovations, the model offers traders a simplified interface with customs and multiple government agencies,' added Michael Schmitz, WCO director of compliance and facilitation. 'The launch of version 3 will ensure that customs remains one of the leaders in the field of border security and trade facilitation.'

Mikuriya

   According to the WCO, official copies of the new version were handed to the directors generals of customs, or their representatives, from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States during the organization's Policy Commission meeting in Brussels on Dec. 7-9, for their long-term commitment of resources and expertise during the development phase.
   The WCO also praised customs administrations from Hong Kong, China and the United Kingdom for their contributions to the development.
   'The new version of the Data Model should be in the hands of WCO members no later than the beginning of February 2010,' the WCO said.
