UPS expands preferred LCL program

   UPS has expanded its preferred less-than-containerload (LCL) ocean freight offering to Western Europe with new port access in Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Belgium.
   The program has now expanded to 26 ports in Asia and four ports in Western Europe. 
   The preferred service (PLCL), introduced two years ago, leverages UPS’ North American freight network for faster transit times. According to a press release, shippers using the program can benefit from delivery times that are 40 percent faster compared to UPS’ standard service. The integrator is gearing the preferred service toward shippers in the automotive, retail, industrial and healthcare arenas.
   Keith Andrey, vice president of UPS ocean freight services, said this expansion comes as shippers continue to consider alternative modes of transport for their freight. The movement away from air cargo toward ocean has been a developing trend in recent years. 
   “In the two years that we’ve offered the PLCL service in Asia, we have seen a great deal of customer interest in an expedited ocean freight product,” Andrey said in a statement. “Now that we are expanding this service to Europe, we can help customers bridge the gap between the speed of air freight and the economy of ocean freight to better compete in the global market.” – Jon Ross
