The new terminal has a total projected capacity of 1.35 million TEUs with 660 meters (2,165 feet) of quay line and 22 hectares of yard space.
DP World said the first two berths will require about $210 million investment and depending on relevant permits and approvals could be operational in the second half of 2009. The berths will initially be capable of handling vessels of up to 5,500 TEUs.
DP World will own 70 percent of the development company through its subsidiary P&O Ports, with the remaining shares held by Peru’s Unimar group. The closing date for the signing of the concession contract is scheduled for July 19.
“Peru is an important addition to our Latin America portfolio, which also includes Puerto Cabello in Venezuela and Buenos Aries in Argentina,” said Dave Sanborn, DP World’s senior vice president and managing director of the Americas. “With efficient services offered through Peru in the west, Venezuela in the northeast and Buenos Aries in the east, importers and exporters will have greater choice and better access to this important market.”
