Tacoma port to vote on major redevelopment contract The Port of Tacoma commissioners on Thursday will consider a major demolition contract and relocation of a wildlife habitat in connection with the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula redevelopment plan.
   The $51 million demolition contract would cover the removal of more than 130 buildings on the peninsula over the next two years, including structures used for chemical processing, woodworking, power generation, storage and other heavy industry.
   Commissioners will vote to include a provision in the demolition contract that calls for contractors to recycle at least 65 percent of the non-hazardous material removed from the buildings set to be razed.
   The redevelopment plan would also see the relocation of the Totem Ocean Trailer Express terminal currently located on the southern edge of the peninsula, and the development of a new marine terminal for ocean carrier NYK Line.
   In another scheduled vote, the commissioners will consider purchasing a parcel of land that includes a city-built, nine-acre wildlife habitat along the northern edge of the Hylebos Waterway. If approved, the $1.2 million project would relocate and expand the habitat at a nearby site.
