Maersk rolling out BAF formula to transatlantic Maersk Line said Friday its new method for calculating fuel surcharges will take effect July 1 for the transatlantic trade.
   The Copenhagen, Denmark-based carrier’s bunker adjustment factor for both dry and refrigerated containers will become:
   ' Eastbound: $115 per TEU, $230 per FEU.
   ' Eastbound (origin U.S. West Coast only): $170 per TEU, $340 per FEU.
   ' Westbound: $140 per TEU, $280 per FEU.
   ' Westbound (destination U.S. West Coast only): $210 per TEU, $420 per FEU.
   Maersk in March started the gradual introduction of its new fuel system, which it said builds on elements such as fuel consumption, transit time and trade imbalances, and adjusts to changing fuel prices on either a monthly or quarterly basis according to the trade. The transatlantic BAF will adjust quarterly. All trades are scheduled to begin using the new formula on Jan. 1, except the Asia/Middle East, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka trade, which will begin July 1, 2009.
