Operating earnings were up nearly 5 percent to 677 million euros, and the integrator finished the quarter with a 17-percent rise in net profit to 468 million euros.
Officials attribute the revenue rise to strong gains in the international express market and positive developments in the German parcel business. The express division saw revenues increase by 7.6 percent during the quarter due primarily to a rise in international time-definite shipments, according to a press release. DHL also received benefits from modernizing its aircraft fleet.
DHL’s global forwarding, freight, unit saw positive growth for the first quarter in two years, the integrator said. Revenues rose by 3 percent over the third quarter of 2013.
“We continue to profit from our unique competitive position in emerging markets and our role as an e-commerce enabler. For this reason, we remain on track in spite of the current challenging environment,” DHL’s chief executive officer, Frank Appel, said in a statement. “Thanks to our continuous investments in the expansion of our network and infrastructure as well as our increased effort to optimize operational processes, we will be able to even more systematically address the needs of our customers and offer our services even more efficiently in the future.”
