Redwood City port cements wharf project details

Redwood City port cements wharf project details    Redwood City port officials have announced an $11 million wharf replacement project at a port dry bulk terminal that could double the amount of material the terminal can handle.
The project would replace two 60-year-old wood-piling wharves at the Cemex cement distribution terminal with a long single concrete wharf capable of supporting heavy loading and unloading equipment. Cemex is constrained by the age of the pier to using lighter-duty cargo handling equipment.
The new wharf would also allow Monterrey, Mexico-based Cemex to berth and work two dry bulk barges at the same time, doubling the terminal's capacity.
Cemex, a global aggregate and building material firm, imports crushed rock through the terminal for use in cement for customers in the region.
An additional part of the project would remove an aging 30,000-square-foot warehouse near the wharf, providing new leasable space to the port.
According to port officials, initial studies of the wharf project should be completed by this summer.
The Port of Redwood City, located in the southern end of San Francisco Bay, it is the only U.S. deepwater port south of the Port of Oakland.
