Long Beach port engineering chief to be promoted

Long Beach port engineering chief to be promoted Port of Long Beach chief harbor engineer Douglas A. Thiessen is to be promoted today to the port's new managing director of engineering position.
   Thiessen will remain head of the port's engineering staff of nearly 100 and retain responsibility for all port engineering and construction projects.
   The new managing director position is part of a reorganization of the port management structure that began last year.
   Port officials have not said if Thiessen would also retain the 'Chief Harbor Engineer' status, the traditional title at many ports for a harbor's lead engineer.
   Thiessen joined the port in January 2000 as assistant harbor engineer and was named to the chief harbor engineer position in November 2000.
