Widdows elected chairman of World Shipping Council

Widdows elected chairman of World Shipping Council Ron Widdows has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the World Shipping Council, a trade organization that represents the liner shipping industry in legislative and other policy matters.
   Widdows is president and chief executive of NOL, the Singapore-based parent company of container shipping company APL.

   He succeeds Adolf Adrion, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, who chaired the World Shipping Council since 2005. Adrion is retiring from Hapag-Lloyd after 51 years of service, and Ulrich Kranich, who has taken over responsibility for the global operations of Hapag-Lloyd, has been elected to the World Shipping Council board.
   The World Shipping Council has offices in Washington and Brussels. Its members carry more than 90 percent of international containerized trade.
   Other members of the council’s board are: Philip Chow, OOCL; Thomas Crowley Jr., Crowley Maritime Corp.; Doren Goder, Zim Integrated Shipping Services; Klaus Meves, Hamburg Sud; J.W. Park, Hanjin Shipping;    Knud Pontoppidan, A.P. Moller-Maersk; Rodolphe Saade, CMA CGM; Sun Jia-Kang, COSCO Container Lines; and Masakaza Yakushiji, MOL.
   Crowley, Goder, Park, Widdows and Yakushiji were elected this week by council members for new two-year terms.
