COSCO Ports volumes jump 10% in April

The terminal operator arm of state-owned conglomerate China COSCO SHIPPING handled 8.6 million TEUs in April 2017, a sharp increase from 7.8 million TEUs in the same 2016 period.    COSCO SHIPPING Ports Ltd. saw container volumes jump 10 percent in April 2017 compared with the same period last year, according to recent data from the port terminal operator.
   Monthly container throughout at COSCO Ports terminals increased from 7.8 million TEUs last April to 8.6 million TEUs in April 2017, while year-to-date volumes also saw an 8.2 percent increase over the same 2016 period.
   The Bohai Rim region saw overall throughput increase 2.7 percent year-over-year to 2.86 million TEUs. Within the Bohai Rim region, the volumes at the Jinzhou New Age Container Terminal increased the most at 79 percent – from 23,200 TEUs to 41,600 TEUs – compared with April 2016, while Yingkou Container Terminal volumes dropped 21.7 percent to 108,000 TEUs.
   Throughput at terminals in the Yangtze River Delta area increased 4.1 percent to 1.63 million TEUs from the previous year. Of note, Ningbo Yuan Dong Terminals saw a 23 percent increase in container volumes while Lianyungang New Oriental International Terminals saw a 21 percent decrease in volumes.
   The Southeast Coast region saw an overall increase in volumes of 5 percent, while the Pearl River Delta saw a 7 percent increase in volumes, led by a 27 percent increase at COSCO-HIT Terminal at Hong Kong.
   Overseas, COSCO Shipping Ports saw a total year-over-year increase of 45.5 percent in international container volumes to 1.5 million TEUs in April.
