Navis signs terminal automation deal with Georgia Port Authority

Navis signs terminal automation deal with Georgia Port Authority Oakland-based supply chain software firm Navis said Wednesday it has signed a $15 million deal to provide the Georgia Port Authority's Garden City Terminal with a yard and gate automation system.
   Under terms of the contract, Navis will design and build the Savannah terminal's Automated Terminal Asset Management System, or ATAMS, which will automate gate and yard processes, identify and track containers egressing the terminal, and integrate the new systems with GPA’s existing Navis terminal operating system.
   The proposed gate automation system utilizes radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags installed on over 7,500 local trucks serving the port. The plan also calls for an RFID reader network to monitor the tags and an optical character recognition, or OCR, system for container and chassis identification and damage inspection.
   The yard plan calls for a global positioning system, or GPS, to track and provide the precise location of every asset across the terminal and automate the operation of equipment in the container storage areas.
   A Navis proprietary system will integrate the gate and yard setups through a Navis terminal managing system.
   The contract calls for completion of the project in the fourth quarter of 2008.
