Port of Veracruz container volumes up 8%

Port of Veracruz container volumes up 8% The Port of Veracruz on Mexico's Gulf Coast said container volumes increased 8.1 percent in 2007, helping to offset decreases in its breakbulk, liquid bulk and dry bulk business.
   Containerized cargo improved to 729,717 TEUs. Container tonnage increased 6.2 percent to 7 million tons. The port also saw a 21.7 percent surge in auto shipments to 642,249 vehicle units. By weight, the increase was 29.5 percent to just under 950,000 tons.
   Because of the declines in breakbulk and bulk cargoes, the overall port tonnage was down 2.6 percent. Breakbulk volumes were down 19.6 percent, while bulk volumes for fertilizers, scrap, cast iron, sorghum, wheat, soybeans, and vegetables oils all decreased.
