AIM PUBLISHES NEW STANDARD FOR READABLE BAR CODES    AIM Inc., a Pittsburgh-based, non-profit authority on automatic identification and data collection, has published an International Symbology Specification for PosiCode.
   The new position-based standard has been designed for creating readable bar codes where controlling bar widths may be difficult, especially in direct-marketing processes such as laser engraving, chemical etching, dot peen or indent marking and machining.
   A position-based symbology decouples the widths of the bars from their positions. The centers of the bars are laid out on a grid of equally spaced parallel lines. Upon “reading” the code, the data is decoded based on the position of the bars rather than their widths.
