HMM box volumes skyrocket on Asia-USWC trade

According to PIERS Data, South Korean ocean carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine handled 13,186 TEUs per week on the Asia to U.S. West Coast trade in April 2017, up 73 percent from 7,604 TEUs per week the previous year.    South Korean ocean carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) saw its volumes skyrocket 73 percent year-over-year on the Asia to U.S. West Coast trade in April 2017.
   According to PIERS Data, HMM handled 13,186 TEUs per week on the Asia to U.S. West Coast trade for the month, up 73 percent from 7,604 TEUs per week in April 2016.
   As a result, the carrier has increased its market share position in the trade from 11th in the world to fifth during the same time period.
   HMM’s total volumes from Asia to all U.S trades rose 67 percent year-over-year in April 2017 to 17,932 TEUs.
   The carrier said it has seen its volumes from Asia to the U.S. rapidly increase since it entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. in April 2017.
   Looking ahead, an HMM official said the company expects gradual improvements in profitability as it heads into the peak season with higher volumes.
