Port of Marseilles Fos sees higher volumes, revenues in 2016

The French Mediterranean port handled 1.25 million TEUs for the year, a 3 percent increase from 2015 and a new record for the port, according to a statement from the port authority.    The Port of Marseilles Fos handled 1.25 million TEUs in 2016, a 3 percent increase from the previous year and a new record for the port, according to a statement from the port authority.
   Since the implementation of a four-year strategic plan in 2014, the French Mediterranean port has seen revenues rise 9.7 percent to 148.7 million euros (U.S. $156.9 million). During that time roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) volumes at the port have grown 12 percent, container throughput 7 percent and passenger activity 10 percent.
   Marseilles Fos’ 2014-2018 strategic plan aims to grow business “based on diversification of trades, tight cost control and developments to boost income from logistics and industrial tenants,” the port said.
   Under the plan, the port has cut internal and external costs 4.8 percent to 11.4 million euros for the full year in 2016.
   “Investments during this time totaled 135 million euros and are now being followed by a 2017-2019 spending program designed to further enhance the port’s position as a motor of the regional economy supporting 41,500 direct and indirect jobs,” Marseilles Fos said, adding that work on the next strategic plan (2019-2023) will begin this year.
