Maher installs Kalmar system Maher Terminals has outfitted the straddle carrier fleet at its terminal in Elizabeth, N.J., with system for tracking the position of cranes and coordinating the movement of containers.
   The system is made by Kalmar Industries and involves 183 straddle carriers. Maher is Kalmar’s biggest customer.
   One part of the system involves Kalmar’s “Smartpath” container position verification system, which allows the straddle carrier driver to receive instructions for his next task from a digital monitor installed in his cabin. A unit on the crane exchanges information with the yard management system. Since there is no manual input, mistakes and misplaced containers are reduced.
   Maher is also using Kalmar’s Fleetview software, which assists control room operators in optimizing the usage of their equipment fleet and minimizes travel without a container, to boost productivity.
