The current agreement expires this year. The new agreement is estimated to generate $13 million in revenue for the port and allows the Chicago-based company to expand its footprint.
Morton imports solar salt — produced by capturing salt water in shallow ponds where the sun evaporates most of the water — from Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas. The salt is used for swimming pools, de-icing pavement and water-softening systems.
The company has operated its sea-salt processing plant at the Florida port since 1990.
