CBP trains 2,100 Iraqi border agents in Jordan

CBP trains 2,100 Iraqi border agents in Jordan Robert Bonner, U.S. Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, met in Jordan Monday with officials from the Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement to discuss CBP’s role in training Iraqi border police.
   CBP said its officers and Border Patrol agents recently assisted in the apprehension of 41 alleged terrorists at the Iraqi border who were smuggling weapons into the country to arm insurgents.
   U.S. personnel are teaching Iraqi how to build a professional border force and techniques for securing the border. There are 20 CBP officers and agents stationed at the Jordanian International Police Training Center to provide instruction to the Iraqi cadets.
   Since Aug. 25, the CBP team has helped train more than 1,600 Iraqi border police officers in three separate classes, CBP said. Training includes border security tactics, human rights, defensive tactics, weapons training, vehicle searches for suicide bombs, as well as basic customs and immigration procedures.
   A fourth class of over 500 Iraqis began this week and is scheduled to graduate at the end of this month.
