Saade elected chairman of ELAA    The Brussels-based carrier lobby group European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA) has elected Jacques Saade, chairman of the executive board of CMA CGM as its new chairman.
   Effective Jan. 1, Saade will replace Klaus Meves, chairman of the German shipping group Hamburg Sud.
   The ELAA was established in May 2003 to promote carriers interests in the debate surrounding the proposed repeal of Regulation 4056/86, granting Europe’s liner conferences an exemption to set common freight rates and cooperate on capacity. Last week, the EC proposed to end the conference system. The EC also said it will publish guidelines on the application of the competition rules to the sector and to examine any potential replacement model, including suggestions put forward by the ELAA.
   “The role of the ELAA is vital in ensuring that a stable, resilient but above all commercially relevant, regulatory system is in place to succeed liner conferences within the next few years,” said Saade.
