ACI: MAY 2002 NUMBERS UP FOR CARGO       Airports Council International recently reported that air cargo volumes were up almost four percent for May 2002, compared to the same month last year.
   ACI’s report studied the volumes from airports in six regions worldwide:    Africa, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and North America.
   For May 2002, all airports in these regions reported handling a total of    5,321,370 metric tons of cargo for this May, which is 3.6 percent up from last May’s total of 5,136,457 metric tons.
   ACI reported that cargo volumes handled rose in the Asia/Pacific region by 15 percent in May when compared to May 2001, and the Middle East reported a 9 percent increase for the same month. The North American region decreased 1 percent in cargo volumes handled. Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean dropped 4 percent each, reporting volumes handled at 78,291 metric tons, and 208,853 metric tons, respectively.
   ACI’s report showed that Memphis International Airport was the world’s busiest airport, recording a 45 percent increase (286,666 metric tons) this May for cargo volumes handled.
      ACI membership consists of 534 international airports and airport authorities, operating over 1,400 airports in 165 countries and territories.
