Port of Savannah says container volumes up 14.9% Georgia Ports Authority reported it handled more than 2.6 million TEUs in the fiscal year ending June 30, a 14.9-percent increase over the prior fiscal year.
   Total tonnage for all GPA terminals, including Bainbridge, Brunswick, Columbus and Savannah, reached record 25.8 million tons, a 17.5 percent increase.
   The agency noted that for the first time in its history, the Port of Savannah’s total exports exceeded 1 million TEUs. Containerized exports to China, the leading destination, were up 23.6 percent to 175,000 TEUs. Other leading destinations were Korea, 60,875 TEU (down 6.5 percent); Japan, 58,003 TEUs (up 19.6 percent); Turkey, 47,328 TEUs (up 48.8 percent); and Italy, 44,324 (up 48.8 percent).
   During the fiscal year the port’s fastest growing destinations for containerized exports included India, where volumes grew 281 percent to 18,335 TEUs; Vietnam, 11,149 TEUs (up 247 percent); and the Philippines, 14,791 TEUs (up 112 percent. Volumes to Egypt and Russia were up more than 90 percent as well.
   Leading exports included wood pulp, paper and paperboard, including waste paper; fabrics and cotton; fresh and frozen poultry; and drilling mud.
