UP adds Milwaukee to ongoing investment projects

   Union Pacific Railroad has commenced a $6.1 million upgrade to its infrastructure near Milwaukee, replacing track, resurfacing at railroad crossings and replacing switches.
   The upgrades will occur on the UP line between Milwaukee and Sheboygan, Wisc.
   Last week, UP also said it is upgrading rail line between Pinckneyville and Mount Vernon, Ill., at a cost of $5.5 million. For that project, “the railroad will replace 34,500 ties, install 12,800 tons of rock ballast, and renew the surfaces at 64 road crossings,” according to a press release.
   Officials have said there will be nearly 1,500 projects undertaken throughout UP’s system this year.
   “In addition to helping move our customers’ goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion,” Donna Kush, Union Pacific’s vice president of public affairs, northern region, said in a statement.
