Gioia Tauro becomes 31st operational CSI port    The port of Gioia Tauro in Italy has become the 31st operational port in the Container Security Initiative (CSI) of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
   'The primary purpose of CSI is to protect the global trading system and the trade lanes between CSI ports and the U.S. By expanding CSI to the port of Gioia Tauro, the government of Italy is helping to make a safer, more secure world trading system,' CBP commissioner Robert C. Bonner said in a statement.
   Mario Andrea Guaiana, director general of Italian Customs, cited the 'effective cooperation existing between the U.S. and Italy ' (an) accord aimed at identifying high-risk shipments.'
   The CSI network now includes Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver, Rotterdam, Le Havre, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Singapore, Yokohama, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe, Hong Kong, Goteborg (Sweden), Felixstowe, Liverpool, Southampton, Thamesport, Tilbury (U.K.), Busan (South Korea), Durban (South Africa), Port Klang and Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia), Laem Chabang (Thailand), Algeciras (Spain), Piraeus (Greece), Genoa, La Spezia, Naples and Gioia Tauro.
