Borders to close Ohio DC, shift work to Calif., Pa., Tenn. Ann Arbor, Mich.-based retailer Borders said Monday it is closing its Ohio distribution center near Columbus and will transfer the facility's operations to distribution centers in California, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
   The 172,000-square-foot Columbus center, which processes and ships all of Borders’ music and movie products, will be shuttered by year's end, taking with it more than 130 positions.
   The nation's No. 2 bookstore operator, Borders said the consolidation move aims to improve shipping times and efficiency.
   Starting early next year, Borders will begin transferring operations to the three other distribution centers, each ranging in size from 350,000 to 600,000 square feet, with excess capacity to handle an increased amount of work.
   The firm operates more than 1,200 retail stores under the Borders and Waldenbooks names. Last month the firm said it had widened its net loss in the second quarter to $25.1 million, compared to a loss of $18.4 million in the year-ago period. Second quarter revenue increased 10 percent to $956.7 million from $866.3 million.
