PortMiami welcomes largest containership to ever call Florida

The 10,081-TEU Maersk Shanghai, which sails on 2M Alliance’s TP11/America service, still pales in comparison to the 20,568-TEU Madrid Maersk, which has been making the rounds in Europe as part of the alliance’s AE2 loop.    The Port of Miami welcomed the largest vessel to call a port in Florida, the Maersk Shanghai, on June 14, said the port.
The 10,081-TEU, 324-meter long post-Panamax ship sails on 2M Alliance’s TP11/America service. According to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting, the full port rotation for the loop starts in Xiamen and travels to Kaoshiung, Shekou, Yantian, Cai Mep, Singapore, Salalah, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Miami, Freeport Bahamas, New York, Singapore and back to Xiamen.
“We welcome the Maersk Shanghai to PortMiami. Its arrival is a milestone for PortMiami as it also makes history by being the largest cargo containership ever to visit a Florida port,” said Carlos A. Gimenez, mayor of Miami-Dade county.
“PortMiami has made tremendous investments in infrastructure improvements to solidify its position as a world class Global Gateway”, said PortMiami Director and CEO Juan M. Kuryla. “Today we’re the only full-service port on the East Coast of the US south of Virginia with a channel depth of -50/-52 feet able to handle the larger Super-Post-Panamax ships.”
Meanwhile in Europe, the Madrid Maersk, which at 20,568 TEUs dwarfs any vessels currently calling the U.S., has been making the rounds on the maiden voyage on the 2M Alliance’s AE2 loop. The vessel will be docking at APM Terminals in Rotterdam on Thursday, according to the port.
