The 19-kilometer bridge would link the islands of Fehmarn in Germany and Lolland in Denmark and provide a more direct truck route from major population centers such as Hamburg and Copenhagen.
The bridge could be a blow to ferry operators such as Scandlines, and faces opposition from environmentalists.
Reportedly the bridge would cost $7.4 billion. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and take until 2018 to complete.
