Second bidder on Punta Colonet named A little less than two weeks after Union Pacific backed out of the bidding for construction and operation of a Baja California megaport, a Mexican construction firm said it would bid on the project, worth potentially $5 billion to $8 billion.
   Mexican construction firm Ideal said Wednesday it would compete in bidding for the Punta Colonet multimodal megaport project near Ensenada, the daily Reforma reported. The company joins U.S. marine terminal operator SSA Marine on the potential bidder list.
   The paper reported that Ideal could partner with either Union Pacific or Kansas City Southern.
   A key portion of the project is a rail line connecting the port facilities with main U.S. rail lines across the border. UP was originally planning to partner with multinational port operator Hutchison Port Holdings, but pulled its hat from the ring earlier this month. The Omaha-Neb.-based railroad did not rule out a partnership with another firm on the project.
   Bidding on the project – which could eventually be as large as the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex in Southern California – is expected to begin by the end of the year.
