Descartes aquires mobile last-mile solutions provider

Descartes’ purchase of Airclic for nearly $30 million is intended to build out its capability in routing, mobile and telematics solutions.    The logistics and trade compliance software provider Descartes Systems Group has acquired Airclic Inc., a Pennsylvania-based provider of mobile solutions that help companies reduce the cost of last-mile delivery by automating traditionally paper-based processes.
The purchase price was $29.7 million.
“The ‘last mile’ is a key piece of the supply chain that directly touches customers and has traditionally been fraught with manual, paper-based processes,” Descartes said. “Airclic’s Perform platform provides configurable, feature-rich mobile technology and advanced electronic, proof-of-delivery solutions that operate on a hand-held device carried by the driver. The solutions help customers across a number of industry verticals — including third-party logistics, food and beverage, retail and healthcare — improve transportation efficiency and reduce the cost of delivering goods.”
Descartes said demand is growing for mobile applications that help companies improve their fleet operations. Airclic’s solutions are deployed on more than 40,000 handheld devices across a range of verticals, and the acquisition is intended to help strengthen Descartes’ routing, mobile and telematics solution portfolio.
Descartes Chief Executive Officer Ed Ryan said the two companies had several common customers already. “With a focus on integrating our businesses to provide superior results for our customers, we believe we can meet the growing demand for integrated routing and mobile fleet-management solutions, and put Airclic on a path to achieving similar operational profitability to Descartes.”
