Philadelphia receives Hyundai cars
The first of 150,000 Hyundai and Kia automobiles that the Port of Philadelphia expects to receive annually were delivered to Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on Tuesday.
In April, the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and Holt Logistics Corp. reached an agreement with Hyundai Motor Co. and its logistics affiliate, Glovis of America, to import and process the cars. Holt Logistics Corp. has a long-term lease with PRPA to operate the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.
Seven vessels are to arrive in August, bringing more than 17,000 Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Over the course of a year, about 100 ships are expected.
The Hyundai 230, arrived late Monday carrying 1,811 vehicles from two ports in South Korea. On Wednesday International Longshoremen's Association work crews began unloading the vehicles from the vessel and transporting them to the adjacent auto finishing facility at Pier 98 Annex at Columbus Boulevard and Oregon Avenue, by the Walt Whitman Bridge. Once processed, the vehicles will leave by truck, and possibly rail, for delivery to dealerships throughout the United States.
The imports, which previously moved through Baltimore and Newark, N.J., are expected to create 276 local jobs and 415 throughout the Philadelphia region.
