In a letter to customers, Jacob M. Wegrzyn, vice president and general manager of Horizon’s Puerto Rico division, said the carrier “will continue to operate our direct weekly service to Puerto Rico from Elizabeth, N.J. As part of this review process we have identified customer-focused service efficiency improvements, which we are working with our terminal operator, APM Terminals, to put in place as soon as possible.”
Wegrzyn said the decision follows an “extensive review of our service options and a detailed evaluation of ports serving the Northeast.”
Horizon competitor Sea Star started a new service in April from Philadelphia and Crowley operates out of terminals on the Delaware River in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
Horizon said it will offer customers cargo cutoff at 4:30 p.m. on Friday for a Friday night sailing, expedited freight receiving lanes on Thursdays and Fridays for Horizon Lines customers, beginning on July 29.
