European industrial production increases in May

The euro area, made up of 19 nations, saw a 1.3 increase in industrial production in May 2017 while the EU28 saw a 1.2 percent increase, according to the statistical office of the European Union.    Industrial production in the euro area increased 1.3 percent and 1.2 percent in the EU28 in May 2017 compared to April 2017, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.  
   Year-over-year, industrial production increased by 4.0 percent in both zones during May. By comparison, in April 2017 industrial production rose by 0.3 percent in euro area and by 0.1 percent in the EU28. 
   The increase in both areas is due to the production of capital goods, durable goods, non-durable consumer goods and energy. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in industrial production were registered in Romania and the Czech Republic for both monthly and yearly production increases.
   The EC index of industrial production measures the evolution of the volume of production for industry excluding construction, based on data adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects.
