Yangtze 2010 container volume rose 26%    Container throughput at Yangtze River ports rose 26 percent to 9.1 million TEUs in 2010, according to new statistics released by the Yangtze River Administration, a division of China’s Ministry of Transport.
   Of that total, 3.6 million TEUs were related to foreign trade, a 19 percent increase over 2009. Domestic trade rose 31 percent to 5.5 million TEUs.
   Yangtze container volume is projected to rise 20 percent in 2011 to 11 million TEUs, according to the administration.
   'One reason for the increase in throughput is the growing number of manufacturing companies that are setting up plants in central and western China in order to reduce costs and tap new markets,' said the U.K.-based Yangtze Business Services (YBS), which publishes a biannual look at cargo transportation on the river. 'However, there are significant challenges involved in transporting goods to such locations.'
