Panama Canal awards second major excavation contract

Panama Canal awards second major excavation contract The Panama Canal Authority has awarded a second major contract for expansion.
   The excavation contract was awarded to Consorcio Cilsa Minera Mar'a, a joint venture between Panama- and Mexico-based firms.
   The companies will dig an access channel that will connect a new set of locks on the Pacific end of the canal with the existing Gaillard Cut. The project involves the removal of 7.5 million cubic meters from a 2.40kilometer stretch just north of where the new Pacific locks will be built.
   The consortium’s bid of $25.5 million was the lowest of eight received and more than $36 million less than one submitted by International Underground Corp. of the United States.
