The 14-mile C&D connects the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, shaving about 300 miles of voyage time for vessels operating between the ports of Baltimore and Philadelphia.
According to a news report in The News Journal of Delaware, the Coast Guard reported that at 1 p.m. on Monday the C&D’s closure affected two containerships and six tug and barge units. Most of today’s deep sea cargo ships can no longer transit the C&D because of draft restrictions.
