The call is added on the eastbound leg, with the new rotation being Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Fuqing, Chiwan, Port Kelang, Durban, Walvis Bay, Tema, Apapa, Lome, Abidjan, Durban, Colombo, Port Kelang and Qingdao.
The service has operated with 10 CMA CGM vessels averaging 3,269 TEUs, according to American Shipper affiliate ComPair Data. The line said it will expand to 11 vessels with a lower effective capacity of 2,600 TEUs per ship.
“This new call will meet the strong customer demand for a direct service between Asia and South Africa,' said St'phane Courquin, deputy vice president Africa, Indian Ocean, and Oceania Lines for CMA CGM.
Durban is the largest container terminal in sub-Saharan Africa.
