U.S. nominates Lantz for top IMO job

   The U.S. State Department has nominated Jeffrey Lantz to become the next secretary-general of the United Nation’s International Maritime Organization.
   Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, who has been secretary-general of the London-based organization since 2003, is slated to step down in June.
   Lantz is the Coast Guard's director for commercial regulations and standards, and is responsible for developing U.S. national maritime safety and environmental protection regulations and policies. He is head of the U.S. delegation to the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee and the Marine Environment Protection Committee.

   The State Department issued a press release last week saying Lantz is “uniquely qualified” for the job, noting his 35-year career at the Coast Guard, including 25 years of active duty.
   “His knowledge and credibility on international maritime issues, including piracy, maritime security, greenhouse gas emissions, etc., is well-established and contributed to his election as chairman of the IMO Council, the organization's second-highest governing body,” the State Department said.
