Port of Redwood City opens new wharf

   California’s Port of Redwood City’s new $17-million wharf, the first new wharf for cargo ships in the San Francisco Bay area that meets the newest structure standards, the port said, opens Wednesday.
   The modern wharf replaces a 60-year-old wooden wharf, and will be used to dock the largest dry bulk ships passing through the Panama Canal.
   Construction began in September 2012. In addition to the new wharf – constructed of reinforced concrete – other project improvements include a new longshoreman’s building, upgraded water/electrical utilities, new seismic monitoring equipment, new security fencing and gates, exterior lighting and a parking area, the port said.
   The new wharf is at the northern end of the Redwood Harbor Ship Channel, and includes a new 950-foot seawall.
   According to the port, the project was financed by a $10-million 2012 Port Revenue Bond and port capital project reserves.
