EPA lauds corporate green power efforts Several FedEx and UPS facilities are among the nation’s top 53 companies in purchasing electrical power from renewable energy sources, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The agency is encouraging companies through its Green Power Partnership to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other environmental impacts by purchasing electricity from renewable rather than conventional sources.
The 53 Fortune 500 companies collectively buy 6 billion kilowatt-hours of green power per year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by the equivalent of 570 million gallons of gasoline per year or the amount needed to power almost 670,000 homes. More than 850 companies participating companies are annually buying 13 billion kWh of green power.
FedEx Kinkos, the office services and package store, ranks 18th with 76.3 million kWh per year of purchased green power. Four UPS package hubs in California collectively buy 2.95 million kWh of energy per year, ranking 37th on the list.
FedEx Express’ Oakland hub ranks 45th with 1.2 million kWh of green power purchases.
Solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biogas and low-impact hydropower are types of renewable energy available today.
